Even beginning to accept hope for a troubled teen's future, will give them whole new countenances. But some are not as open to this idea as others. What keeps us from positive, healthy and constructive change? One big reason is doubt and unbelief.
So I asked a group of troubled boys ... "What's the worst, most deadly four-letter word in the English language?"
"Oh Ms., we can't say that in front of youuuuu!"
"I know what you're thinking, and it's not that word. Let's think of some others."
Finally we came to the answer ... "The worst, most deadly four-letter word in the English language is 'can't.' Keep saying 'I can't' and you'll end up believing and convincing yourselves that you really can't. If you believe you can't, you won't even try. But if you believe you can, then you have a far better chance of mastering the technique."
There is a brighter future in store for you! Let's go ...
The first step is to believe that you can!
"Discovering the Real 'You" is a fun personality test to be used as an ice-breaker for the course. Of course, no personality testing is scientifically 100% accurate and complete. And no person falls into solely one classification; there are generally personality traits from several categories that apply. But here various personality types and character traits for each, will be discovered. And youth should begin to recognize that different personality types approach similar goals by different methods. Realizing and understanding that people are different and may react to situations in a manner that's different than theirs, may reduce or avoid conflict and/or hurt feelings.
In "Identifying Thinking Habits," a list of some different types of thinking habits will be presented. Youth will complete exercises that will help them understand how thinking habits affect their emotions and what they do in different real life situations. Youth will begin to identify thought patterns and habits they have been using. They will put practical applications to daily living situations, and learn how they can be handled differently. The goal of this chapter is to introduce youth to the concept that their actions do affect others, and they should start taking steps to re-think things before they act.
The concept of change is introduced here. Negative experiences and influences will be identified, exposing old attitudes, ideas and beliefs that youth can now release, overcome and replace with truth. Youth will begin to understand about the power of choice, and they will begin to replace old attitudes, ideas and beliefs with new, healthier and more productive ones. Youth will begin to learn how to keep negative situations from happening over and over again, and how to focus their need for power into a posiive direction. They will begin to learn how to deal with regrets from their past and fears about their future. And they will begin to correct themselves when they use a negative thinking habit.
By discussing specific issues that affect young men and women personally, youth should begin to develop more constructive thought processes, thereby leading to more beneficial actions. In Becoming Men of Honor and Women of Grace, youth will create a plan for their future , determine what it will take to accomplish their goals, and establish what it is that they need to avoid in order to be able to reach their goals. They should learn how to shut down some deceptions and untruths that may come against them, before those lies get a grip. Here, they will learn how to emphasize their strengths and decrease their weaknesses, by fine-tuning their value systems. And they will learn the value of accountability.
These are but a few of the goals of the Quit Digging! program. Other chapters include How You God To Be That Way, It's All In Your Mind and Hope.
"All youth need the opportunity to look within themselves and understand how best to relate to the world. Young adults will benefit from this thought-provoking workbook as they take incremental steps to understand their feelings, thoughts and behaviors. This workbook is suitable for all teenagers, and can be used in a variety of settings, from church to school, to a treatment program. It offers creative, yet simple, exercises for self analysis."
